These cakes were smash cakes for a two little girls’ first birthdays who had a cupcake themed party. The cakes were butter cream iced with fondant decorations for easier smashing.
I’m in love with these smash cakes! (I also LOVE both Moose & Zee themed cakes/smash cakes). My daughter’s 1st birthday is right around the corner & my hubby & I have decided to take on the challenge of making her smash cake! We like the idea of this particular cake because it’s adorable and the most simplest (to say the least!) of the ones that we like. Obviously, cake decorating isn’t as easy as it looks and I have a ton of questions. But if you could answer just a few (at your earliest convenience), I would greatly appreciate it..
How do you get the fondant cut-outs to stick to the buttercream? fondant on fondant?
Is store bought buttercream icing just as effective as home-made?
Fondant will stick to butter cream on its own. To stick fondant to fondant you just use a little dab of water. (easiest to apply with a clean paint brush) Basically the water makes the fondant sticky since it is pure sugar and will stick to anything. But water will leave a “glisten” mark if you use to much..it only takes a little
Sometimes I use store bought butter cream, sometimes I make my own. For this cake any kind of butter cream would do since you won’t be covering it in fondant.
I actually came down with the flu when I was supposed to make this cake so that is actually a store bought cake that i smoothed the icing on and added my own decorations.
If you have any more questions I would be glad to help. Also, I would love to see a picture of your cake when you are done!
Andrea
Hi Andrea! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.. Your advice will be really helpful when I do the smash cake! I’ll definitely send you a picture of the finished product next month. Again, I appreciate your help & will be hitting you up again if I have anymore questions! :]
I’m wondering, what is the traditional size of a smashcake? I’m going to be making my son’s in a couple of weeks and will need to find the right size pan! lol Thanks so much and I love your work!!

Hi Beth - I’m not sure what the ‘traditional” size is but I typically use 6″ cake pans for my smash cakes. Hope that helps!
